Summative and Formative Assessment

Concerning the assessment and evaluation, learners are assessed employing both formal and informal continuous assessment methods and techniques which include written examinations, written coursework assessment, language proficiency tests, portfolios, self-assessment testing techniques.

EPS students are assessed not only at the end of their English language studies but also over each semester. Assessment is conducted from a variety of perspectives. Portfolio assessment is one of the formative assessment methods (continuous assessment) with which BAU Cyprus EPS students are assessed with. On the other hand, several summative tests such as EPS English Placement Examination, Mid-term examinations, end of semester Final English Examination, and the English Proficiency tests are summative examinations that are administered at EPS.

The Overview for EPS Formative and Summative Assessment – B1-B1+ Level

All students take a mid-term examination after seven weeks of commencement of their studies and a final examination after 16 weeks of instruction. Additionally, students complete and submit the assignments included in the portfolio assessment part in consideration of the deadlines indicated on the weekly schemes of work. A student’s end-of-semester final grade is composed of 20 % of the student’s midterm exam score, 30 % of the student’s final exam score, and 50 % of the student’s portfolio assessment score.

B1-B1+ students are also required to sit English Proficiency Exam at the end of their B1-B1+  studies to be able to commence their studies at the faculty of their choice. The English Proficiency Exam is taken at the end of each semester by the students whose final exam results indicate that they have a reasonable chance of achieving a required grade to move to the faculty. Students who do not take or pass the exam repeat the same English proficiency levels. B1-B1+ final proficiency exam grade is the combination of 40 % of the score they obtain from the English Proficiency Examination and 60 % of the total of their end of semester scores which is a combination of the grades from the mid-term exam (20 %), final exam (30 %) and the portfolio assessment (50 %). The passing grade for B1 students is 50 % and above.

Proficiency Exam

The EPS Proficiency Exam which B1-B1+ sit at the end of their studies assesses a student’s ability to study in their chosen faculty. The proficiency Exam is given at the end of each semester. The date, place, and time for the exam are announced on the Students’ Notice Board and EPS website.

The exam consists of Online Oxford Placement Test and Face-to-face Speaking and Writing Examinations. The continuous assessment marks (60%) are combined with the result of the proficiency exam (40 %) to have a CEFR level of B2 and higher.
